A confusing thought

“Fill your cup first before you fill for others. Love yourself.”

This popped up on a discussion forum and we ended up debating. For many the first thought that came to their minds was “that is being selfish”. But several others disagreed. They said that it means self love. They argued that there is a difference between self love and being selfish. Someone suggested calling self care instead of self love. Suddenly things sounded a lot better. Self care seems less selfish and something that is important for one’s well being.

Occasionally pampering oneself feels so good. Over do it and it feels horrible. Do something nice for others over and over again it always feels good. Do good samaritans ever tire of doing good to others? If they did, they would stop and disappear from the news. But that rarely happens.

I thought I got my head around that and then I stumble upon this.

An incredibly powerful essay that would stop you in your tracks, especially if you are being pulled down because of something happening in your life and as a result you are feeling absolutely helpless. This photo essay demonstrates that the universe has a plan of its own and makes things happen, when the time is right, to pull you out of the hell hole you might be in. How else would you explain the magnanimity with which these lovely people have welcomed total strangers into their homes? Something made them feel the need to reach out and help. Something gave them the strength to hear the stories of these people who have gone through hell and open their door open to the helpless people. How you call that “something” is up to you. But it definitely exists and that is what pushes you to help someone. Self love or self care is to make sure you are well enough to carry out your stock of good deeds. If you look at that way, then yeah filling your cup first makes total sense.
