I have had math anxiety while in school and somehow it felt like the whole world was reinforcing the fact that math was not really my cup of tea. Especially my teachers in school for some reason did not really help me to overcome my anxiety. After reading your article I realise that I just could not see the beauty of math back then because I was so preoccupied with those tense feelings that came by so quickly each time I saw a problem that looked different. I did not believe that I could solve it.
I ran away from math as soon as I could but it came back with vengeance in college. I had to learn calculus. My class mates had already studied calculus before as unlike me they had not run away. That kind of made it worse. But fortunately for me the math prof was brilliant. She made me see the beauty of math. Today when I teach my son math, I see the beauty. With age comes wisdom I guess:) Having said that “mindfulness” appears to be a very useful tool. It would be nice to know if they are any resources available online to know it better. Here in India, I have not heard of such a concept in schools.
