I used to be terrified of math as a kid. I looked for ways to avoid it and managed to do it too, in pre-university. But when I went to college and decided to specialise in economics, maths came back with literally a bang. I was terrified. My classmates who had studied calculus did not make it any easier. They warned me that it is super tough. Little did I know then, that life has a way of springing up surprises. Our math professor, one Mrs.Usha Ramani, showed me that the world of mathematics need not be as terrifying as it seemed to me. Her classes used to be fascinating. When we came to Calculus, I wasn’t terrified but eager to learn. As a parent I too made the same mistake that my teachers in school did with me by using time limits and showing one way to solve problems. Until the time I stumbled upon blogs written by math teachers such as yourself and Ali Kayaspor. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and approaches to teaching math. It definitely changed the way in which we as a family study math. We discuss math. Rule to remember, “Don’t worry about being wrong. Just say what comes to your mind first when you see a math problem.”
