My son’s school here in Chennai, India came up with a comprehensive life skills program which many parents were up against, including myself. Our worry was that the focus on academics would be lost and this program would justify a potential fee hike. Also we were worried that school hours would become longer leaving less time for free play. The school was nice enough to arrange a meet where they showed us what they had planned for and heard our concerns. One of the life skills program was cooking classes that taught cuisines from across the world. One parent in the audience pointed out that she would not like it if her daughter came back and asked her to cook pasta differently! I don’t know from where that thought emerged but it did make me wonder what I would do if I were in her situation. I don’t know yet:) but having read this post I think I have information to look at this program from a different perspective. Of course we do not have any classes that teach nutrition and health in the lower classes. But the fact that the high school students have the opportunity is definitely a starting point.
